Multiscale geometric characterization of functional surfaces: Tribological aspects

The aim of multiscale surface analysis is to identify the characteristic observation scales at which surface topography is most strongly related to manufacturing process parameters and functional properties, such as wettability. Many surfaces exhibit multiscale geometric structures that can be described using a fractal approach, accounting for features of different lengths and surface areas.
The decomposition of surface topography into features ranging from nanoscale and microscale roughness to waviness and form provides the basis for multiscale analysis and enables the investigation of their relationships with surface phenomena. By analyzing surface topography across multiple scales, it is possible to determine which topographical components are most relevant to functional behavior. Multiscale analysis of surface topography is also important for understanding tribological phenomena, particularly friction, wear, and lubrication. Identifying the characteristic scales at which surface topography most strongly influences tribological behavior
can support the design of surfaces to enhance lubrication efficiency, reduce friction and wear, and optimize the overall performance of tribological systems.
