SMARTLIFE: Digital Twins for Offshore Wind Turbines
The SMARTLIFE Progress Report (27 January 2025) presents advances in developing digital twin technologies to optimize the operation, maintenance, structural reliability, and service life of offshore wind turbines in the Belgian North Sea. The project, led by 24SEA and VUB, combines physics-based modeling, artificial intelligence, structural health monitoring, and environmental data analysis. Key achievements include improved data management platforms, automated operational classification, enhanced structural models, machine-learning-based damage detection, and fatigue-life prediction. The ultimate objective is to develop an integrated decision-support tool for predictive maintenance, remaining useful life assessment, and lifetime extension of offshore wind farms.
