Curriculum
Research on additive manufacturing has focused initially on fused deposition modeling (FDM). After the expiration of the patent owned by Stratasys Corporation, research has been carried on fused filament fabrication (FFF), which are widespread due to low cost and many choices of available materials as filaments. The topics covered are related to the experimental study of optimal process parameters and post treatments for reducing the surface roughness of samples, topological optimization of specimens for the reduction of the material used, and the study of mechanical properties of additive technology products. Microfluidic applications of 3D printing are under investigation, and then comparing performance of fluidic mixers and diffusers fabricated with different additive processes.
Subsequently, he was involved as a coordinator of research on cold spray at the Apulia Repair Development Centre For Additive Repairs, which is the first laboratory in Italy created for experts, researchers, and young post-graduates whose mission is to develop innovative repair procedures for aviation engine components by employing 3D printing. The research conducted was on systematic methods to determine the optimal process parameters for different powders.
The research was focused on exploiting photogrammetry for measuring micro-features in industrial products. These studies have deepened recently by using the camera calibration model, verifying the validity of classical models for very close-range photogrammetry, the development of a new hybrid scaling method for photogrammetric measurements, and photogrammetric measurements of microchannels in fluidic platforms. Past research topics include point cloud processing, which involves artificial intelligence methodologies such as neural networks and genetic algorithms.
The scanning systems analysis was focused specifically on photogrammetric and laser systems and biometric applications of photogrammetry. This task has regarded human face analysis and its relations with maxillofacial pathologies and human body scanning with optical methods.
Before beginning his academic career, as a researcher at MASMEC, an Italian company for the manufacture of automatic and biomedical devices, from 1997 to 1999, he participated in a European research project on E!Manufuturing called “Self-Innovating extended Factory for Electro-mechanical Products” in collaboration with ZANUSSI and ITIA-CNR (Institute of Industrial Technologies and Automation-Italian National Research Council- www.itia.cnr.it) and to the national project “SPI-3” in collaboration with Electrolux and ITIA-CNR. In this phase of his research, he was actively concerned with mechatronic systems; specifically, quality control of the performance of air compressors through innovative methodologies regarding acoustic and vibration measures. Thanks to his studies several online automatic test station has been designed and installed at Unidad Hermetica (Electrolux) in Sabadel-Spain and at TRW-Marzocchi at Ferrara-Italy. Both these machines are working.
He is associated with the European Society for Precision Engineering (Euspen), International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and the Italian Association of Manufacturing Processes (AITEM).
He is also an assignee of funding research projects greater than EUR100000 as a responsible and participating member of research unit projects greater than EUR 1000000.
