Curriculum
Pietro De Palma was born in Bari (Italy) in 1966. 1989: He graduated with honours in Mechanical Engineering at the Università di Bari. 1990: Diploma Course in Fluid Dynamics at the von Karman Institute (Bruxelles) with honours; he was awarded the "Belgian Government Prize". 1993: Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Bari. 1992-1998: assistant professor of hydraulic and thermal machines at Politecnico di Bari. 1998-2003: associate professor at Università di Roma "Tor Vergata". 2003- : professor of hydraulic and thermal machines at Politecnico di Bari. Teaching activity: Energy Systems, Fluid Machinery, Fluid Dynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Turbomachinery, Thermal Plants.
2002- : group leader for the development of innovative numerical methods in fluid dynamics for the Center of Excellence in Computational Mechanics (Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR), grant CofinLab-2001). Main research activity: design of numerical methods for compressible and incompressible flows; stability analysis of shear flows; turbulence and transition modeling; combustion modeling; numerical analysis of complex flow in turbomachinery; energy systems; microfluidics. He has worked under two research contracts supported by European Union from 1990 to 1996 (BRITE programs) and under four contracts supported by MIUR (PRIN-1999, 2001, 2003, 2007). Principal investigator of the PRIN-2007 project: “Novel computational fluid-dynamic methods for the simulation of aerospace vehicles". Consultant of General Electric and Avio Aero. Member of EuroMech. Visiting scholar at ENSAM, Paris, in 2014. Invited lectures: Michigan 1997, France 1998, California 2000, Japan 2000, Spain 2000, Belgium 2005, India 2005. Reviewer of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, European Journal of Mechanics-B, AIAA Journal, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, Journal of Computational Physics, Physics of Fluids, Computer & Fluids, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences. He has published about 150 scientific papers. Awards: Emerald Highly Commended Award 2002; Emerald Highly Commended Award 2007.
2009-2012: member of the Board of Directors of the Politecnico di Bari. 2012-2015: Coordinator of the Master in Mechanical Engineering. 2012-2018: Deputy Director of the Department of Mechanics, Mathematics, and Management. 2017 -: Head of the Ph. D. School of Politecnico di Bari.
